L’histoire de BMF et du design brutaliste en Allemagne

The History of BMF and Brutalist Design in Germany

Brutalist design is an artistic and architectural approach that emerged in the 1950s and developed over the following decades. Its name comes from the French term "béton brut", used by the architect Le Corbusier to describe a style focused on raw materials and an unadorned aesthetic. While the movement is best known for its monumental concrete buildings, it has also influenced decorative arts and industrial design, particularly in Germany.

BMF: a reference in German metallurgical production

BMF, or Bayerische Metallwarenfabrik , is a German company specializing in metalworking, particularly stainless steel. Founded in the 19th century, it experienced a particular boom after the Second World War by offering household and decorative objects with a modern and functional design.

In the 1960s and 1970s, BMF fully embraced the Brutalist design trend, producing objects with sculptural forms and textured finishes. Unlike other manufacturers who preferred smooth, polished surfaces, BMF explored relief patterns, scarifications and contrasting materials to give their pieces a tactile and artistic dimension.

The BMF vase and footed bowl: an expression of brutalist design

The stainless steel objects produced by BMF in the 60s and 70s are distinguished by their sobriety and robustness. The brutalist stainless steel footed bowl is an emblematic example.

  • Material : Solid stainless steel, a choice associated with durability and industrial aesthetics.
  • Relief patterns : geometric scarifications that capture the light and reinforce the sculptural aspect.
  • Versatility : can be used as a decorative bowl, pocket emptier or small vase.

This type of object embodies a minimalist and functional aesthetic, characteristic of the German modernist movement.

Why collect BMF items today?

With the resurgence of brutalist and industrial design in interior design, BMF designs are experiencing a renewed interest. Their quality of manufacture and timeless style make them sought-after pieces by collectors and vintage design enthusiasts.

Whether to enrich a collection, bring an authentic touch to a contemporary interior or simply to own an emblematic object of German modernism, a BMF footed bowl is a relevant and aesthetic choice.
