La Maison Baguès dans les années 70 - 80

Maison Baguès in the 70s - 80s

Maison Baguès: A History of Excellence in Lighting and Artistic Ironwork

Founded at the end of the 19th century, Maison Baguès is an essential reference in the field of lighting and artistic ironwork. Specializing in the design of chandeliers, wall lights and furniture in gilded bronze and wrought iron, it has managed to cross the ages by combining tradition and innovation.

From the very beginning, Maison Baguès has distinguished itself through its craftsmanship and the quality of its creations. Its unique approach to working with metal and glass has allowed it to quickly distinguish itself, attracting a prestigious clientele both in France and abroad.

The 1920s marked a pivotal stage in the history of the house with the advent of Art Deco. Baguès then adopted more refined lines, while retaining refined details that would become its signature. Bronze chandeliers adorned with crystals, wall sconces with floral motifs and elaborate scrolls, each piece is a work of art intended to embellish sophisticated interiors.

Over the decades, Maison Baguès has adapted to trends while preserving its heritage. While the 1950s and 1960s marked the international expansion of the brand with orders for major hotels and renowned decorators such as Jacques Adnet, Jean Royère and Henri Samuel.

The 70s remain a more confidential period, but no less interesting.

Production in the 70s: A Confidential Turning Point

The 70s marked a more discreet but no less interesting period for Maison Baguès. While the previous decades had been marked by international expansion and recognition in the worlds of decoration and luxury hotels, this period saw the evolution of the style and materials used.

In a context where modernist design and minimalism are gaining ground, Baguès adapts its production by offering lighting fixtures that retain their refinement while integrating more refined lines. The gilded bronze structures, omnipresent in previous decades, give way to compositions mixing patinated metal, smoked glass and geometric shapes inspired by contemporary trends.

Collaborations with decorators are becoming more targeted, responding to specific orders from a discerning clientele. However, unlike other luxury lighting houses such as Maison Charles with Christiane Charles, the identity of the designers who contributed to Baguès' creations in the 70s and 80s remains more mysterious. The archives from this period are poorly documented and it is difficult to precisely identify the artists or workshops who left their mark on this confidential production. This enigma gives a special aura to the lighting from this period, making their study and collection even more captivating.

To date, four models of table lamps have been formally attributed to Maison Baguès for this period. These pieces are distinguished by a common stylistic signature, where we find exceptional quality of execution, the use of noble materials and remarkable bronze work. Their sculptural design, combining balance of forms and richness of details, testifies to the artisanal know-how that has always characterized Maison Baguès.
