Paul Harald Tilgmann founded Tilgmans Keramik in 1948 in Utbynäs near Gothenburg. In 1953, he hired Polish refugee Marian Zawadzki, who began experimenting with the sgraffito technique. In the 1960s, production moved toward a darker, rustic style, and in 1971 he moved production to Londonderry, Ireland. Harry Tillman died in Helsinki, Finland in 1974, and soon after the factory closed.
