An elegant still life oil painting on canvas by Simon-Auguste (1887–1969), a French artist renowned for his intimate, luminous, and silent compositions. The work features a bouquet of stylized flowers in a pitcher, accompanied by a cup, on a tableclothed table, in front of a wall decorated with a decorative pattern in powder pink hues.
Simon-Auguste, born in Marseille, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence, before moving to Paris where he exhibited from the 1920s. He was regularly present at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne and especially the Salon des Tuileries, where he exhibited from 1929 until the 1960s.
A friend of several artists of his time, he worked alongside Othon Friesz, René Levrel, and Maurice Brianchon, with whom he shared a quest for balance between formal modernity and French tradition. He was also represented by the Galerie Druet in Paris in the 1930s, and later by other galleries on the Left Bank.
His work, always imbued with Mediterranean softness, focuses on simple subjects: interiors, bouquets, and everyday objects. It is now exhibited in several public and private collections, notably at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and in provincial museums.
The back of the canvas is hand-signed " Fleurs – Simon-Auguste", with the words "Original & listed canvas – Copy prohibited". Presented in an antique patinated giltwood frame, this work is typical of his mature period in the 1950s–1960s.
