Rare pair of sculptural solid glass vases designed by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, model Jääpuikko ("Icicle"), produced in Finland between 1958 and 1966.
These iconic models of post-war Finnish design feature an extremely streamlined conical silhouette, combined with a subtle gradient of deep blue embedded in a substantial mass of clear crystal. The elongated and minimalist shape evokes an ice stalactite, a recurring theme in Sarpaneva's organic work in the late 1950s.
Very beautiful decorative and sculptural presence, particularly for the large 41 cm model, now sought after by collectors of Scandinavian glass and modernist design.
Both pieces are signed with a stylus under the base:
"Timo Sarpaneva – Iittala".
